All You Need To Know About Exploring The Truckee River

Every spring the majority of people wait enthusiastically for the Truckee River to fill with runoff from the snow-covered mountains. And, a number of tourists book a luxury Reno NV motel and plan to visit Truckee River every year. Once the river is healthy, it is rafting season.

The importance of the Truckee River

The Truckee River is much more than a leisure spot, though. It is the sole passage from the Lake Tahoe. The lake is more than seventy miles around and is roughly 1,000 feet deep at various spots, yet there is just one way any water flows out.

As snow melts, this single outflow contrasts with dozens of waterfalls and creeks going into the lake. The biggest and the most scenic of these is Eagle Falls, above Emerald Bay. Healthy snowfall the last two years makes for tumbling, roaring falls.

The Lake Tahoe Dam

Water of the Truckee River is owed to the Lake Tahoe Dam. Opened in 1913, the dam is in charge of the top 6 feet of water in Lake Tahoe. It has got seventeen gates that are opened to let water out, and this is what forms the Truckee River. A caretaker lived here for decades, but these days, the operations are managed distantly by computer. You will get to see a differing number of these gates open if you come by on more than a single visit.

Lake Tahoe is just a few miles away from a boutique hotel in Reno - Kramer’s Midtown.

In front of the dame in Tahoe City is a bridge where people usually stop and incline their body to take a look at this attractive river. In the back of the dam, there is a forest area where you can rest or picnic with your family after your walk along the trail. I was there on a hot day, so a sit-down in the shade was welcome. The views from here are so calm and serene.

In addition, you can even walk along the back of the concrete dam, where the Bureau of Reclamation helpfully offers old pictures and a written history of the dam. You can compare water levels year by year. The last 2 years have boasted a stellar amount of water and snowfall, coming after a year of extreme drought. I was at the Truckee River some time ago and walked across a completely dry riverbed. It is cheering to see the river flowing along again.

The Truckee River Bike Trail

This winding path along the river is paved-over railway tracks on the train route between the town of Truckee and Tahoe City, which is on the northern edge of Lake Tahoe. The path is open to walkers and bikers. You can ride for around eight miles round trip with no sharp mountain hills to struggle. You will be afforded continuous views of the flowing river while riding amongst the tall pines.
